We greatly enjoyed spending time with expert music historian, Jack McCarthy, on our June and July trips to Philadelphia. He took us on a fascinating tour through the centuries of Philadelphia’s musical landscape: from the silence of the Quakers to the first public live music performance, through the early trend-setting of rock and roll, jazz, R&B, soul, and of course, the birth of the legendary Philadelphia Orchestra. Along the way, we learned about the vast complexity and diversity of Philly music including the Lenni-Lenape tribe, the Hermits of the Wissahickon, American Bandstand and Philadelphia International Records.
